"I have been a Christian for 16 years and the best thing about it is being free."

Place of Origin: Chennai, India.

I was a typical south Indian girl from a typical Hindu family. The thing that made me so different was my thirst for the truth – to know the meaning of life, to know who ‘God’ was. Even when I was young I asked my grandmother, life’s most important questions like – why am I here on this Earth & what will happen to me after I die. I went to various temples looking for my answers, talking to the idols, doing all the rituals at the various festivals and feeling good about being “religious”.  During high school all my focus was to study hard and make my parents proud. I so longed for their approval and to please them.

Transformative Story:  It was in my undergraduate university in Chennai that I first heard from a friend that Jesus was the only way to the God who created me. My friend said that the Bible is the truth and has the answers to all my questions about life, death and God. I could not imagine becoming a Christian because of what impact it would have on my family and relatives. I wrestled with the questions in my mind and the words of my friend whose life was totally transformed after accepting Jesus. After 6 months, I prayed to Jesus to show me if He was real. I started reading the Bible and the words that I read opened my eyes. Though outwardly I considered myself a good person – religious, not harming others, studious and an obedient daughter, the Bible showed me otherwise. I saw that God knows all my thoughts and that scared me because they were not good. The words from the book of Acts pierced my heart and showed me very clearly that God does not live in temples made from human hands. Heaven is his throne and the Earth his footstool. (Acts 7:49). I realized why I did not hear from the idols in the temples. God does not live there. He is too big to be contained in an idol. Another verse that God spoke to me was Acts 4:12, Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. In the months that followed, there were so many answered prayers and signs from God that I wholeheartedly put my faith and trust in Jesus. It was hard to leave the religion of my birth, but God also promised that my entire family will be saved. (Acts 16:31). I have been a Christian for 16 years and the best thing about it is being free.

John 8:32 "...you will know the truth and the truth will set you free."
